PBIS

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an approach that promotes positive behavior in schools. It uses three tiers of intervention. Tier 1 focuses on strategies to support all students and focuses on setting clear expectations and teaching appropriate behaviors. Tier 2 provides targeted interventions for students who need additional support beyond tier one strategies. Tier 3 offers intensive, individualized interventions for students with big behavioral challenges. A student who accesses Tier 3 intensive services also benefits from Tier 1 & 2 supports.
By using a Multi-tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) framework, all students receive the level of behavior, social-emotional and academic support they need to succeed, and schools are more effective, positive and proactive.
PBIS teaches students what good behavior looks like, relies on data to track and drive instructional decisions, and provides additional support for small groups and individual students as needed.
Behavior rules are taught like other subjects such as math or reading, by:
1. Setting Clear Expectations: Rules for everyone to follow might include being respectful, responsible, and safe. Students practice these rules every day.
2. Teaching Expectations: Teachers explain and use visuals and role-plays to show what rules look like in various places like classroom, hallway, and playground.
3. Recognizing Good Behavior: Students who follow rules are recognized through praise, stickers, or special privileges making them feel good about their choices.
4. Correcting Problem Behavior: If a student breaks a rule, teachers calmly remind them of the expectations and help them fix their behavior. They might use consequences like time-outs or loss of privileges, but the focus is on learning from mistakes.
5. Monitoring and Adjusting: Schools keep track of behavior to see how well PBIS is working. They use this information to make changes if needed.
PBIS is important because it helps create a positive, safe school environment. When students know what is expected and are acknowledged for good behavior, they are more likely to behave well, making school a better place for everyone to learn and grow. PBIS:
1. Improves Behavior: Students learn to make good choices and behave well.
2. Creates a Positive Environment: Schools become happier and safer places.
3. Supports All Students: PBIS helps all students, including those who struggle with behavior.
4. Builds Better Relationships: Students and teachers build positive relationships based on respect and understanding.
