Internet Safety for Teens

1. When creating a screen name, don’t include personal information like birthdate.
2. Avoid opening suspicious files or links. If you are unsure whether something is safe, ask an adult.
3. Be kind to people and respect their opinions. Remember there are real people behind every post and comment.
4. Check with a parent or caregiver before disclosing any personal information (such as name, age, address, or credit card number).
5. When working on an assignment, utilize social media blocking software to avoid being distracted.
6. Don’t share your passwords with anyone other than a trusted adult such as a parent or caregiver.
7. Practice caution when people are overly friendly or flirting with you. They may be trying to gain something, which can turn into a manipulative situation.
8. Never meet in person with someone you met online. If someone asks to meet you, tell your parent or caregiver right away.
9. Don’t post or send explicit photos. Once they are out, you can’t get them back.
10. Don’t respond to inappropriate or harmful content. Report it to a trusted adult. If someone is threatening your safety, take a screenshot then block the person.
