Virginia Home for Boys and Girls–Independent Living Program


Description:
Virginia Home for Boys and Girls has a group care program for adolescents ages 11-17 and an independent living program for young adults ages 17-21 who are aging out of traditional foster care. Independent Living townhouse apartments on VHBG's campus include rent, food allowance, and utilities. The program using the Casey assessment of independent living skills and provides independent living skills coaching related to education, employment, transportation, nutrition, money management, self-care, and social relationships. Youth are assisted with a wide-array of tasks and details of everyday life, from making a doctor's appointment to opening a bank account to disputing a bill. Youth are taught how to advocate for themselves; helped to graduate from high school and enroll in college; and helped to secure short-term jobs and provided long-term career counseling.
