SUMMARY:Stronger Together Youth and Young Adult Peer Support Group
DESCRIPTION:Our Winter 2025 Stronger Together support group for youth and young adults meets for 8 weekly sessions on Wednesdays\, January 22 to March 12 from 6 – 7:30 PM. This Winter’s theme is Finding Strength Through Connection\, and group activities include practicing social engagement through creative activities and games.  The group emphasizes positive peer supports as a context for strengths-based growth.  Group members will engage with one another and learn ways to build on strengths\, find their personal ‘happy’\, and have fun in the company of peers. \nThe youth and young adult Stronger Together skills and peer support group is designed for teens and young adults age 14-22 who have lived experiences in one or more service systems such as: \n\nSocial services (foster care\, child welfare\, family services)\nSpecial education (learning or emotional disability or other condition)\nMental health services\nSubstance use treatment/recovery\n\nGroups are facilitated by professional clinicians and meet during the school year.  A light dinner is served each evening. DESCRIPTION:Our Winter 2025 Stronger Together support group for youth and young adults meets for 8 weekly sessions on Wednesdays\, January 22 to March 12 from 6 – 7:30 PM. This Winter’s theme is Finding Strength Through Connection\, and group activities include practicing social engagement through creative activities and games.  The group emphasizes positive peer supports as a context for strengths-based growth.  Group members will engage with one another and learn ways to build on strengths\, find their personal ‘happy’\, and have fun in the company of peers. \nThe youth and young adult Stronger Together skills and peer support group is designed for teens and young adults age 14-22 who have lived experiences in one or more service systems such as: \n\nSocial services (foster care\, child welfare\, family services)\nSpecial education (learning or emotional disability or other condition)\nMental health services\nSubstance use treatment/recovery\n\nGroups are facilitated by professional clinicians and meet during the school year.  A light dinner is served each evening. The group offers a network to share resources and information among the group members\, reducing feelings of isolation\, and celebrating family successes in maintaining permanency for and the ongoing commitment building strong families. Peer support can be critical to caregiver self-care and can contribute to healthy family functioning and improved outcomes for children and youth. \nThe group is FREE of charge. Meetings are facilitated by professional mental health clinicians who have deep experience with kinship families. \nThe group meets twice a month\, in two formats virtual and in-person. Garrett Jones\, LCSW. \nMr. Jones\, formerly Resource Family and Family Engagement Program Manager at the Virginia Department of Social Services\, is Child Welfare Strategic Initiatives Lead – Kin First Culture\, Child Welfare Information Gateway\, A Service of the Children’s Bureau/ACF/HHS. \nThis webinar will be focused on providing information regarding national trends and focus areas related to Kinship Care in both informal and formal situations. Specifically\, Mr. Jones will: \n1. Review the key factors that underlie the “Kin First” focus of child welfare operations and the role of the Family First Prevention Services Act. \n2. Melissa is a certified recreational therapist\, certified dementia practitioner and educator\, certified best friends dementia trainer\, certified dementia capable care specialist and trainer. and a Licensed BCAT® practitioner. \nMelissa has been providing care to older adults for over 20 years. She is also the recipient of the ATRA Frank L. Basile Clinician of the Year 2016\, 2024 Pride in Our Community Leader of Loudoun County Pride\, and National Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Trainer (CADDCT) of 2024. She has presented at numerous conferences and has published evidence-based practice programing. \nShe has had the opportunity to live in Romania and provide sensory integration for orphans. She also held the position of Social Coordinator for participants in the Cerebral Palsy – International Sports and Recreation Association (CP- ISRA) World Championship. Through Melissa’s experience both clinically and in the community\, she brings and provides out of the box thinking and support to both clients and caregivers daily.

Assistive technology is any technology used by individuals with disabilities who may otherwise not be able to or would not be able to perform a task as well without the technology. Assistive technology includes both the devices (communication devices\, apps\, extensions\, hardware\, software\, mobility devices) and the services provided to access and implement the devices. \nJoin us for an introduction to assistive technology\, understand its importance for your student\, find out how they can access it\, and learn about resources that can guide you through the process. \n  \nPresenter Geoffrey Weber is the Assistive Technology Coordinator for Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC) at George Mason University.
