Access to special education and related services for children and youth with disabilities starts with referral and evaluation to determine eligibility. This process can be complex and overwhelming for foster, adoptive and kinship families new to the process.
In this presentation, we will focus on the initial evaluation for special education services and address how to initiate an evaluation; what the evaluation entails; the timelines to conduct an evaluation; and concerns about labeling a child who has been evaluates.
Participants will be able to evaluate signs of concerns that could lead families to request an evaluation for special education and related services; identify the components and timelines for an initial evaluation; judge the pros and cons of identification of specific disability conditions, including the stigma of labels; and name strategies for preparing and engaging older students in the evaluation and eligibility process.
Presenter, Renee Myers, NCPS, is the Content Specialist for Formed Families Forward. Renee is committed to providing parents and caregivers with user friendly resources to help them access the special education and disability services their children need to be successful.
