Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) children and youth are overrepresented in foster care and at increased risk of depression, suicidal ideation, and substance abuse. Furthermore, kinship and adoptive families may be raising LGBTQ children. Children raised in families formed through foster care, kinship and adoption are especially vulnerable because they have experienced loss and trauma due to separation from birth families.
