Building LGBTQ Awareness and Acceptance: A Foster, Adoptive and Kinship Family Sensitivity Training

February 22 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm EST

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) children and youth are overrepresented in foster care and at increased risk of depression, suicidal ideation, and substance abuse. Furthermore, kinship and adoptive families may be raising LGBTQ children. Children raised in families formed through foster care, kinship and adoption are especially vulnerable because they have experienced loss and trauma due to separation from birth families. Caregivers who are inadvertently insensitive to the needs of LGBTQ children and youth can unknowingly increase the risk of mental health problems and jeopardize secure family attachment.

LGBTQ children and youth do benefit from family awareness and support. Family and educator acceptance is a powerful factor in protecting and promoting mental health, educational and family outcomes. Formed Families Forward invites families and professionals to a two-session webinar series to build awareness and introduce approaches intended to make LGBTQ children feel more safe, comfortable, and included. Helen McDonald, Youth Education and Outreach Specialist at Fairfax County Domestic and Sexual Violence Services, will present a Safe Zone training. The training will provide a deeper familiarity and comfort with vocabulary, inclusive practices, and privilege. Beth Spivack from Formed Families Forward will join Helen in this important discussion.

This training is being presented in two consecutive sessions, February 22 and March 1, 2021. There is only one registration for both sessions. Participants are expected to attend both sessions if possible.
